My Church

New Life Church is a campus-focused church of about 900 members at the University of Michigan.  Our mission is “To turn U of M students into fully-devoted followers of Christ.”  We focus on the campus as a unique center of influence in our society.

When I joined New Life Church during my freshman year on campus – 1997 – it was a small and struggling church.  There were about 50 people attending on Sundays, and only 20 or so who were really involved.  GCM was strongly considering shutting down the church because the campus seemed “unreachable”.  Maybe it would be better to reallocate their resources elsewhere…?

Pastors Steve Hayes and Mike Pape were passionate about seeing U of M influenced for God and asked GCM to give us one more year.  The church began to pray desperately to see God bring change to this campus.  I’ll never forget the huge flood of people who showed up to our first service at the beginning of my sophomore year!  God had began a powerful work that is still going on.

Many years and thousands of changed lives later, God is still moving in New Life Church and bringing change to the culture of U of M’s campus.  Students are finding healing, real relationships, and getting to know their God.  It’s been amazing to be a part of it.
